This book is a historical fiction novel about twin sisters, Tamiko and Tomiko. Tamiko, is sold by her father to a geisha house and later the okiya sells her to a brothel in Kyoto, Japan. She loses her virginity as she learns the art of making love as a "Lady of the Night." Due to circumstances, Tamiko moves across the Pacific Ocean to San Francisco, California, and later to Seattle, Washington and becomes a Madam. Tomiko, the younger twin, is forced to marry a high-ranking member of the Yakuza and learns to respect and love her husband. Both twins meet after years of separation and go through World War II in Kyoto, Japan. Both women, after going through trials and tribulations, find each other and live in peace and harmony—Tamiko in San Francsico—Tomiko in Kyoto, Japan.
