Magda and Abraham Saul live in Prague when Poland is invaded in September 1939, marking the start of World War II. To save their baby, Heda, from the Nazi regime, they leave her in a basket in front of the Catholic Church of St. Peter.

Magda is a housekeeper for the Jan Barak family, and Abraham is a shoemaker. Jan Barak is an attorney for the Nazis, and his wife, Jean, is a housewife. Abraham is arrested and suffers in Auschwitz. Magda hides and is saved. Abraham meets a Japanese diplomat, Kimura Yoshio, who is fleeing the Japanese Embassy.

The story tells the trials and tribulations of a World Gone Mad.
